My name is Dayna Thomas, and I am a third generation Pres girl. I am on the soccer and field hockey teams and I am the vice president of the Pres STEAM club. I am a member of National Honors Society and I am active in the Pres leadership program through grade school visits and our leadership forums. I am passionate about helping others in any way I can and I plan to pursue a career as a pediatrician.
For my Senior Independent Project I am creating an online directory of Presentation Academy alumnae and other professionals in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. The purpose of this directory is to give current Pres students an edge when it comes to making connections in STEM fields by connecting the students with professionals in careers that they might be interested in with the common ground of Pres to unite them.
Once the directory is built, I plan to bring in some of these extraordinary contacts to speak to the student body about their careers, being a woman in a STEM field, and how to prepare for a future in STEM. Through this panel of professionals, Pres girls will gain many valuable life skills like networking and contacting professionals as well as lessons in feminism and leadership.
Through this directory I hope Pres girls will be inspired to break gender stereotypes and pursue STEM careers because women only make up 24% of STEM careers as of 2015. I hope that this directory will inspire young women to break the glass ceiling and provide a better future for themselves as innovators of progress.
Who can be involved? Anyone who has a steady, long-term job that falls under STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
What is STEM and what jobs fall under this category? STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and it is about using concepts such as problem solving, critical thinking, learning, and innovation outside of a classroom in real world situations. STEM jobs are necessary for the future, and the need for these jobs is expected to grow immensely in the next few years. Because these jobs are so important for the future and require divergent thinking, it is adamant that we continue to encourage young women, who have been discouraged in the past, to choose these careers.
Stem Job Fields: Medical, Archeology, Anthropology, Chemistry, Engineering, Dental, Social Sciences, Computer Studies, Robotics, Teachers of STEM subjects, Physics, Economics, Genetics, Forensics, Geology, Pharmacology, Biology, Political Sciences, Food sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Zoology, and many other fields. Here is a link for a full, in-depth list. https://www.onetonline.org/find/stem/?t=0
How to get involved? All you have to do is fill out a quick questionnaire with a few questions about your career at the following link.
Do I have to be a Presentation Academy Graduate to participate? No, you do not have to have graduated from Presentation Academy to be a part of the directory.
Can I be a student to participate? In order to keep the information in the directory accurate for the longest possible time, I ask that you only provide your contact information if you are in a long-term and permanent position. So, if this applies to you, and you’re a high school graduate, you may apply.
What does the question, “Would you be interested in coming in speaking to Pres Girls?” mean? As a second part to my project, I want to get the contacts in the directory to come and speak to Pres girls, so that we can connect face to face. It would be talking to the girls about your job and how you’ve overcome sexism in the workforce.
When will the directory be completed? The directory will be fully published by the end of the 2018-2019 school year.
